We went to the fabulous Tate Modern recently and were entranced by a couple of works in dramatic, arresting red, by Do Ho Suh and Abraham Cruzvillegas.
Do Ho Suh's "Staircase-III" is a representation of the staircase that connects his apartment to his landlord's in Chelsea, New York. Made from translucent, gauzy red fabric, it floats in mid air suspended from a fabric clad ceiling, made all the more ethereal and intriguing with the ever changing quality of light from the windows above. It is a truly beautiful piece of art.
I love Abraham Cruzvillegas' "Blind Self Portrait", part of his "Autoconstrucción" exhibition. The wall installation was created in 2008 when he spent several months at Cove Park in Scotland. Blind Self Portrait is a collection of tickets, receipts, postcards, newspaper cuttings and napkins, painted in wall paint to obscure the information and pinned to the walls in a gloriously display of red rectangles. (He also has a white version of Blind Self Portrait at Modern Art Oxford - until 20 November).
