We went to see the Francis Bacon and Henry Moore exhibition at The Ashmolean on Sunday and its pretty amazing! "Flesh and Bone" which opened last month is a collection of paintings by Bacon and sculptures and drawings by Moore selected to show the incredible similarities between their work.
The Portrait of Pope Innocent X is etheral, exquisite. The Second Version of Triptych 1944 are absolutely disturbing, along with a vast amount of his work, all alienesque, twisted contorted flesh and blood red paint, but the way he depicts these images appeals to me as a graphic designer - they are beautifully presented with graphic, poster like qualities.
I have long been an ardent fan of Moore's work but truly, they are eclipsed by Bacon in this exhibition. Monumental though some of them are, they are dwarfed by the Bacon's brutish, horrific, compelling, mesmerising imagery with the most commanding use of colour and subtlety of brush stroke.
I need to go again so I can better appreciate Moore.
