Last night I went to see the opening of the latest exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, and was completely blown away by the works of Abraham Cruzvillegas. The first piece in the series was a wall of paper cuttings, flyers, travel tickets and postcards he had collected, covered with numerous layers of white matte and gloss paint
then pinned en mass to a white painted brick wall. The effect was like that of a large scale, tactile wallcovering (reminding me of Tracy Kendall's works). Another delight, was getting up very close and seeing the 3d quality of the work with the touches of colour showing on the non painted reverse as it curled with the warping of the paint.
His collection of shrunken heads, made from animal dung, grass and Jesmonite are inspired by those on display at Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford and hang as a giant mobile. Our daughter will love this one!
The third piece was a relief, a map based on the routes around Oxford taken by Cruzvillegas, carved into the walls revealing the wonderful patina of the old terracotta bricks underneath.
I urge to to go and see this show, together with works by American artist Kerry Tribe. We are off again to see it this weekend!
