Done with mirrors

Do you need to add some drama to your interior, bounce a bit of light around a room, visually increase it's size, reflect and layer objects, add a touch of glamour, grandeur...? Then consider using mirrors.

They can do all of the above and so much more and yet most people confine them to the basic functionality of the bathroom or hall wall and dressing table.

In this boutique hotel bedroom we designed, a large round mirror reflects and layers one of our dramatic wallpapers used on the headboard and the main wall. Mirrored cube side tables and details on the lamp and alarm clock continue the theme.

Ilse Crawford has used mirrored and light reflective materials in a number of ways in this lovely bathroom. She has achieved a subtle, quiet glamour here. A large mirrored partition divides the room, reflecting the polished metal roll top bath. A curvacious mirror emulates the curved legs of the French twin basins, and nickel taps and towel radiator extend the metallic colour palette.

How about the mirror taking centre stage? Paint a feature wall dark (try Railings by Farrow & Ball) and add an intriguing 'broken' Venetian mirror to bounce refracted, split images around a room - it should do the trick!

This elegant, contemporary interior with it's pared back palette of black and white with wood are reflected back at the viewer through the huge floor standing mirror, visually doubling the size of the room. The sleek linear feel of this room is softened by the shapely period style armchairs.

Abigail Ahern is a lady who knows how do use mirrors - one of her hallmarks are the huge black convex mirrors she sells. Placed against sludgy dark grey walls, the look is visually stunning, complimented by glowing pool lighting and an ecclectic array of objet and faux flowers.

And if you want all out bang for your bucks, take a (gilt) leaf out of Versailles glorious and golden Hall of Mirrors. It should render any guest suitably speechless!
